Set up some character translations and predefined strings. \*(-- will give an unbreakable dash, \*(PI will give pi, \*(L" will give a left double quote, and \*(R" will give a right double quote. | will give a real vertical bar. \*(C+ will give a nicer C++. Capital omega is used to do unbreakable dashes and therefore won't be available. \*(C` and \*(C' expand to `' in nroff, nothing in troff, for use with C<>..tr \(*W-|\(bv\*(Tr

If the F register is turned on, we'll generate index entries on stderr for titles (.TH), headers (.SH), subsections (.Sh), items (.Ip), and index entries marked with X<> in POD. Of course, you'll have to process the output yourself in some meaningful fashion.. de IX

======================================================================== Title "RANLIB 1" RANLIB 1 "2008-09-10" "binutils-2.18.90" "GNU Development Tools"
"NAME"
ranlib - generate index to archive.
"SYNOPSIS"
Header "SYNOPSIS" ranlib [
-vVt]
archive
"DESCRIPTION"
Header "DESCRIPTION" \fBranlib generates an index to the contents of an archive and
stores it in the archive. The index lists each symbol defined by a
member of an archive that is a relocatable object file.
You may use nm -s or nm --print-armap to list this index.
An archive with such an index speeds up linking to the library and
allows routines in the library to call each other without regard to
their placement in the archive.
The \s-1GNU\s0 ranlib program is another form of \s-1GNU\s0 ar; running
\fBranlib is completely equivalent to executing ar -s.
"OPTIONS"
Header "OPTIONS" "-v" 4
Item "-v" 0
"-V" 4
Item "-V" "--version" 4
Item "--version"
Show the version number of ranlib.
"-t" 4
Item "-t" Update the timestamp of the symbol map of an archive.
"@file" 4
Item "@file" Read command-line options from
file. The options read are
inserted in place of the original @
file option. If
file
does not exist, or cannot be read, then the option will be treated
literally, and not removed.
.Sp
Options in
file are separated by whitespace. A whitespace
character may be included in an option by surrounding the entire
option in either single or double quotes. Any character (including a
backslash) may be included by prefixing the character to be included
with a backslash. The
file may itself contain additional
@
file options; any such options will be processed recursively.
