34
Android Development Tools (ADT) is a plugin for the Eclipse IDE
35 that is designed to give you a powerful, integrated environment in which
36 to build Android applications.

37
38
ADT extends the capabilities of Eclipse to let you quickly set up new Android
39 projects, create an application UI, add components based on the Android
40 Framework API, debug your applications using the Android SDK tools, and even
41 export signed (or unsigned) {@code .apk} files in order to distribute your application.

42
43
Developing in Eclipse with ADT is highly recommended and is the fastest way
44 to get started. With the guided project setup it provides, as well as tools
45 integration, custom XML editors, and debug ouput pane, ADT gives you an
46 incredible boost in developing Android applications.

47
48
This document provides step-by-step instructions on how to download the ADT
49 plugin and install it into your Eclipse development environment. Note that
50 before you can install or use ADT, you must have compatible versions of both the
51 Eclipse IDE and the Android SDK installed. For details, make sure to read <a
52 href="#installing">Installing the ADT Plugin, below.

53
54
If you are already using ADT, this document also provides instructions on
55 how to update ADT to the latest version or how to uninstall it, if necessary.
56

57
58
For information about the features provided by the ADT plugin, such as code
59 editor features, SDK tool integration, and the graphical layout editor (for drag-and-drop layout
60 editing), see the Android Developer Tools

229
Changed output of
javac
from
bin/
to
bin/classes

230 in Eclipse.

231
Improved incremental builds so that resource compilation runs less frequently. Builds no
232 longer run when you edit strings or layouts (unless you add a new
id
) and no longer
233 run once for each library project.

251 development environment (more
252 info).

253
Integrated the Android Asset Studio, which helps you create icons for things
254 like the launcher, menus, and tabs. (<a
255 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/assetstudiointegration">more
256 info).

257
Revamped the Logcat view and added support to display and filter logs by

260
Revamped the SDK Manager UI (more
261 info).

262
Revamped the New Project and the New XML File wizards to have
263 multiple pages. Sample projects are now copied into the workspace such that they can be modified
264 and deleted without affecting the master copy
265 (more info).

269
270
XML and Java editors:

271

272

273
Added a new XML formatter that formats all XML files according to the
274 standard Android coding style. The formatter can also reorder
275 attributes to follow a recommended order and processes any changes made in the Layout editor.
276 (more info).

277
Added the "Go to Matching" (Ctrl-Shift-P) feature, which lets you jump
278 between opening and closing tags in XML files.

279
Added support for the "Select Enclosing Element" feature on Mac.

280
Added a Quickfix for extracting Strings when the caret is inside a String (see
281 more).

282
Improved "smart indent", which allows automatic indentation and un-indentation
283 when pressing the Return key in XML editors (<a

289
Layout editor:

290

291

292
Added tooltip feedback for dragging and resizing operations. For
293 example, when dragging in a relative layout, the proposed
294 constraints are shown. When resizing, the new dimensions are
295 shown (more
296 info).

297
Added the ability to suppress rendering fidelity warnings (<a
298 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/suppressrenderwarnings">more info).

299
Added "Remove Container" visual refactoring that removes the
300 children of a container up to the top level and transfers
301 namespace and layout attributes if necessary (<a
302 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/removecontainervisualrefactoring">more info).

303
Added pull-right menus to the context menu for accessing
304 properties of the parents, which is useful when the children fully
305 cover the parent and make it hard to select on their own.

306
Improved access to properties in the context menu. The most
307 frequently set attributes for each view are listed at the top of
308 the menu. The Properties menu offers access to the most
309 recently set attributes, attributes organized by their defining
310 view, and layout attributes only or all attributes alphabetically (<a

396
"Extract Style" feature pulls out style-related attributes from your layout and extracts
397 them as a new style defined in {@code styles.xml} (<a
398 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/extractstylerefactoring">more info).

399
"Wrap in Container" feature lets you select a group of views then surround them
400 in a new layout (a new view group, such as a LinearLayout), and transfers namespace and layout
401 parameters to the new parent (<a
402 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/newrefactoringswrapinchangelayoutchangewidget">more

404
"Change Layout" feature changes layouts from one type

406 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/newrefactoringswrapinchangelayoutchangewidget">more
407 info).

408
"Change Widget Type" feature changes the type of the
409 selected views to a new type. Also, a new selection context menu
410 in the visual layout editor makes it easy to select siblings as
411 well as views anywhere in the layout that have the same type (<a
412 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/newrefactoringswrapinchangelayoutchangewidget">more
413 info).

414
"Extract as Include" feature finds identical collections of views
415 in other layouts and offers to combine them into a single layout that you can then include in
416 each layout (<a

425
Visual Layout Editor:

426

427

428
This is the update to the layout editor you've been waiting for! It includes (almost) all
429 the goodies demonstrated at Google I/O. Watch
430 the video on YouTube.

431
The palette now supports different configurations for supported widgets. That is, a single
432 view is presented in various different configurations that you can drag into your layout. For
433 example, there is a Text Fields palette category where you can drag an {@link
434 android.widget.EditText} widget in as a password field, an e-mail field, a phone field, or other
435 types of text boxes. Similarly, {@link android.widget.TextView} widgets are preconfigured
436 with large, normal and small theme sizes, and {@link android.widget.LinearLayout} elements are
437 preconfigured in horizontal and vertical configurations (<a
438 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/multipletextfieldandlayouttypes">more info).

439
The palette supports custom views. You can pick up any custom
440 implementations of the View class you've created in your project or from included libraries and
441 drag them into your layout (<a
442 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/customviewsinthepalette">more info).

443
Fragments are available in the palette for placement in your layout. In the tool, you can
444 choose which layout to show rendered for a given fragment tag. Go to declaration works for fragment
445 classes (more info).

446
The layout editor automatically applies a "zoom to fit" for newly
447 opened files as well as on device size and orientation changes to
448 ensure that large layouts are always fully visible unless you
449 manually zoom in.

450
You can drop in an {@code <include>} element from the palette, which will pop up
451 a layout chooser. When you select the layout to include, it is added with an {@code
452 <include>}. Similarly, dropping images or image buttons will pop up image
453 resource choosers (<a
454 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/includetagdropsupport">more info).

455
The configuration chooser now applies the "Render Target" and
456 "Locale" settings project wide, making it trivial to check the
457 layouts for different languages or render targets without having
458 to configure these individually for each layout.

459
The layout editor is smarter about picking a default theme to
460 render a layout with, consulting factors like theme registrations
461 in the manifest, the SDK version, and other factors.

462
The layout editor is smarter about picking a default configuration to render a layout
463 with, defaulting to the currently visible configuration in the previous file. It also considers the
464 SDK target to determine whether to default to a tablet or phone screen size.

465
Basic focus support. The first text field dropped in a layout is assigned focus, and there
466 are Request Focus and Clear Focus context menu items on text
467 fields to change the focus.

468

474
Code completion has been significantly improved. It now works
475 with {@code <style>} elements, completes dimensional units,
476 sorts resource paths in values based on the attribute name, and more. There are also many fixes to
477 handle text replacement (<a
478 href="http://tools.android.com/recent/xmlcodecompletionimprovements">more info).

479
AAPT errors are handled better. They are now underlined for the
480 relevant range in the editor, and a new quickfix makes it trivial
481 to create missing resources.

482
Code completion for drawable, animation and color XML files (<a

619
Improvements to the Visual Layout Editor:
620

621
Support for rendering targets: You can now choose an arbitrary Android platform to
622 render the current page, regardless of the project's minimum platform. This makes it
623 easy to verify the layout and appearance of your activity on different versions of
624 the platform.
625

626
Improved support for empty and nested layouts: Dragging items over nested and
627 invisible layouts automatically enlarges and highlights these layouts, so that they
628 can receive drops.
629

630
XML formatting improvements: The editor generates cleaner XML and you can now enable
631 XML auto-formatting in the Preferences menu.

632
Improved Outline labels: The Outline tab now displays additional information about each
633 View. Textual Views display a snippet of the actual text. Views with a source
634 (such as ImageView) displays the resource name. Included Views display the name of the View.
635

636
When you right click a View in the Layout Editor,
637 the context menu now contains Edit ID... and Edit Text...
638 items. The Properties... context menus now list all of the properties and

648 (Details).

649
Improved diagnostics for class loading and rendering errors: Class loading and rendering
650 error messages are more useful and provide better information about the root cause of the
651 error.

652
Improved error handling to prevent drag and reordering operations from adding children
653 into an {@link android.widget.AdapterView}.

654
Outline reordering: Reordering your views in the Outline tab is much easier

661
Automatic configuration for various view types: Certain views have properties configured
662 by default. For example, the width of an {@link android.widget.EditText} object is set to
663
match_parent
when added to a vertical {@link android.widget.LinearLayout}
664 or a default image is added to an {@link android.widget.ImageButton}.

665
Previews during dragging: Dragging from the palette or dragging within the layout editor
666 now shows live previews of the dragged item.

667
Navigation improvements: In the Layout Editor, double-clicking Views jumps to the
668 corresponding XML element. In the Outline view, double-clicking opens the Properties view.

669
The editor has Honeycomb style animation preview support.

670
Improved rendering support for various Views (such as TabHosts and SlidingDrawers) in

673
Included layouts can be rendered and edited in the context of the layouts that include
674 them. From a layout using an

679 you can quickly change between context layouts, by right clicking in the editor and choosing
680 Show included in.... This feature is only available in Honeycomb.

681

682

683
This release fixes many other bugs, but the most important ones are listed below:
684

685
Fixed issue that prevented launching debug builds on productions devices when
686
debuggable=true
was not set in the Android manifest.

1136
If you are behind a firewall (such as a corporate firewall), make sure that
1137 you have properly configured your proxy settings in Eclipse. In Eclipse,
1138 you can configure proxy information from the main Eclipse menu in

1185
Other install errors

1186
1187
Note that there are features of ADT that require some optional
1188 Eclipse components (for example, WST). If you encounter an error when
1189 installing ADT, your Eclipse installion might not include these components.
1190 For information about how to quickly add the necessary components to your
1191 Eclipse installation, see the troubleshooting topic
1192 ADT
1193 Installation Error: "requires plug-in org.eclipse.wst.sse.ui".

1194
1195
For Linux users

1196
If you encounter this error when installing the ADT Plugin for Eclipse:
1197

1198 An error occurred during provisioning.
1199 Cannot connect to keystore.
1200 JKS

1201

1202 ...then your development machine lacks a suitable Java VM. Installing Sun
1203 Java 6 will resolve this issue and you can then reinstall the ADT
1204 Plugin.

1205
1206
1207
Updating the ADT Plugin

1208
1209
From time to time, a new revision of the ADT Plugin becomes available, with
1210 new features and bug fixes. Generally, when a new revision of ADT is available,
1211 you should update to it as soon as convenient.

1212
1213
In some cases, a new revision of ADT will have a dependency on a specific
1214 revision of the Android SDK Tools. If such dependencies exist, you will need to
1215 update the SDK Tools component of the SDK after installing the new revision of
1216 ADT. To update the SDK Tools component, use the Android SDK and AVD Manager, as
1217 described in Adding SDK Components.

1218
1219
To learn about new features of each ADT revision and also any dependencies on
1220 the SDK Tools, see the listings in the Revisions
1221 section. To determine the version currently installed, open the
1222 Eclipse Installed Software window using Help
1223 > Software Updates and refer to the version listed for
1224 "Android Development Tools".

1225
1226
Follow the steps below to check whether an update is available and, if so,
1227 to install it.

1228
1229

1230
Select Help > Check for Updates.
1231
If there are no updates available, a dialog will say so and you're done.

1232
If there are updates available, select Android DDMS, Android Development Tools,
1233 and Android Hierarchy Viewer, then click Next.

1234
In the Update Details dialog, click Next.

1235
Read and accept the license agreement and then click Finish.
1236 This will download and install the latest version of Android DDMS and
1237 Android Development Tools.

1240
1241
1242
If you encounter problems during the update, remove the existing ADT plugin from Eclipse, then
1243 perform a fresh installation, using the instructions for Installing the ADT
